I have been a little more aggressive lately to press flowers. The dogwoods bloomed early as, did the azaleas, so I didn't get many dried, but I did start a flower pressers club with the little girls in the neighborhood. They helped me pick a lot of flowers, and made small pages of pressed materials, so I sat after they left and pressed what was left that was good. I found a box lid made of corrugated cardboard that came on peck size produce boxes was a great container. I placed two sheets of heavy weight watercolor paper in the bottom to press the flowers between. Once I arranged the flowers, I placed my watercolor pad on top. I don't advise doing this, but rather use the card board back from an old pad of paper. They turned out to be the same size as the box lid. On top of that I placed a layer of smooth river stones I collected in a bucket and use for OH so many things. They were delighfully heavy enough to provide the pressure needed to continue to press the flowers as they flattened without my having to adjust screws as I normally do with my press. The result was superb.
Now as I am thinking what to do with them I am beginning a list of things:
- I thought about making pictures using the flowers to embellish parts of them. For example, I can imagine dolls, or shoes or purses as a theme. Then use the flowers to embellish the hems, heels, bands, sashes, hair, panels, whatever, to colorize the piece. The dolls, shoes, purses could be drawn with ink, painted with watercolors, or cut from fabric or other organic materials, and glued or mod podged like a collage of materials. I can see using my vintage fabric for this kind of projects. In respect of using the vintage fabric, the theme could be quilt patterns. A set of them would look nice framed and gathered on one wall. Also, the them could be applied to canvas, wood, clay pots, switch plates....the mix is endless. I also thought of using old magazines with flower pages, or flower garden pages to make the body of the doll dresses, or shoes. In fact an entire garden theme could be evoved from the mix. ...Til next time. C
